We all go into the world of spirits, shoel, in the Earth first!
The spirit world has many realms just like there are many Heavens...
Before The Atonement:
- There is Paradise (Alma 40:12, 2 Nephi 9:13, 2 Cor 12:4, Moroni 10:34, 4 Nephi 1:14, Rev 2:7, etc....), this is where the innocent children and the elect of God go to rest and continue progression and preach the gospel 1 Pet 4:6, plus many more!!!
- There is Prison sometimes called hell and being damned (Isa. 24:22, 1 Pet. 3:19, 2 Ne. 9:12, Alma 40:14, D&C 76:73, D&C 128:22, D&C 138:20,28,29,57, Moses 7:38,57, Ezekiel 32:18, Matt. 23:14,Luke 20:47, Matt. 23:33, Mark 3:29, Mark 12:40, Mark 16:16, Mormon 9:23, Ether 4:18, Rom. 13:2,2 Thes. 2:12, 1 Tim 5:12, Morm. 9:4, Mosiah 3:24-25, plus sooooo many more!!!
- There is the Bottomless Pit or Perdition sometimes called outer darkness (Alma 40:13, D&C 38:5, Ezekiel 32:18, Psalm 28:1, Rev. 9:1-2, Rev. 11:7, Rev 17:8, Rev 20:1,3, 2 Ne. 24:15, D&C 76:30–49, D&C 76:27-27, plus many more!!!
- Note: sometimes people use the same words to describe both prison and the pit... it just depends on how much that prophet has seen. Also sometimes the when saying pit they are saying grave... Nevertheless there is different levels of being bound in the Earth!
D&C 138: 38-60
Verse 38-49 is him seeing all that have passed away since Adam to Jesus, he's speaking about the faithful and they are in the spirit world specifically in the part called paradise.
Verses 53-54 he also see those who not been born yet in the same place.
53 The Prophet Joseph Smith, and my father, Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and other choice spirits who were reserved to come forth in the fullness of times to take part in laying the foundations of the great latter-day work,
54 Including the building of the temples and the performance of ordinances therein for the redemption of the dead, were also in the spirit world.

From Adam to Jesus' Atonement these places remained separate and divided and one couldn't go to paradise from prison...
There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
After The Atonement:
It is as the same scriptures above but now there is a bridge between Paradise and Prison. Jesus went into paradise and set up a missionary programs so the spirits in prison can hear the gospel and repent. That's why baptisms for the dead are done, because it's to help them because they cannot help themselves, for the ordinances MUST be done on the earth in the flesh as the scriptures declare...John 3:5...
The New Testament indicates that baptisms for the dead were done during the time of the Apostle Paul (see 1 Corinthians 15:29).... This ordinance was restored through Joseph Smith!
John 5:25, 1 Corinthians 15:29, 1 Peter 4:6, D&C 138, D&C 124:29, plus many more...
Note: It appears that there is some connections between the 3rd heaven Paradise, the Paradise IN the Earth and The middle of the Earth where Eden is... It's somehow like rooms/portals/connections together, but there is much puzzle pieces that need to be revealed on this matter. All that I can reveal is what's written in the books of Enoch... There is a Giant tree in the 3rd Heaven which goes down into the Earth where Eden is... (it's roots are in the spirit world paradise, the trunk is in Eden and the tops are in the 3rd Heaven Paradise)... Although the Lord hid the middle parts so the giants couldn't cut it down........ Here's a puzzle piece of one of the miracles to come: When Zion comes, there will be no veil to those in Zion and thus all will be one and able to see and talk with the departed in Paradise...
In Heaven:
Babies, Innocent children and Just men/women made perfect seem to go directly into the Heavens.
D&C 137:7 Thus came the voice of the Lord unto me, saying: All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God;8 Also all that shall die henceforth without a knowledge of it, who would have received it with all their hearts, shall be heirs of that kingdom;
9 For I, the Lord, will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts.
10 And I also beheld that all children who die before they arrive at the years of accountability are saved in the celestial kingdom of heaven.
D&C 129:1 There are two kinds of beings in heaven, namely: Angels, who are resurrected personages, having bodies of flesh and bones—
2 For instance, Jesus said: Handle me and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
3 Secondly: the spirits of just men made perfect, they who are not resurrected, but inherit the same glory.
Cool info:
“For I, the Lord, will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts.” (D&C 137:7–9.)

Elder Orson Pratt taught:
We, as Latter-day Saints, believe that the spirits that occupy these tabernacles have form and likeness similar to the human tabernacle. Of course there may be deformities existing in connection with the outward tabernacle which do not exist in connection with the spirit that inhabits it. These tabernacles become deformed by accident in various ways, sometimes at birth, but this may not altogether or in any degree deform the spirits that dwell within them. [JD 15:242–43]
Elder Pratt then went on to answer his own question:
I can imagine up one, but it cannot be made practicable here, from the fact that the mind of man is unable to use it. For instance, the Book of Mormon tells us, that the angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost, and man when under the influence of it, speaks the language of angels. Why does he speak in this language? Because the Holy Ghost suggests the ideas which he speaks; and it gives him utterance to convey them to the people. . . . Suppose, instead of having arbitrary sounds, such as we have here, to communicate these ideas, that the Holy Ghost itself, through a certain process and power, should enable him to unfold that knowledge to another spirit, all in an instant. [JD 3:101]
Likewise, Elder Orson Pratt taught that our ability to absorb, comprehend, and remember information will be “greatly enlarged” (JD 2:243). He said:
I believe we shall be freed, in the next world, in a great measure, from these narrow, contracted methods of thinking. Instead of thinking in one channel, and following up one certain course of reasoning to find a certain truth, knowledge will rush in from all quarters; it will come in like the light which flows from the sun, penetrating every part, informing the spirit, and giving understanding concerning ten thousand things at the same time; and the mind will be capable of receiving and retaining all. [JD 2:246]
We read or learn a thing by observation yesterday, and today or tomorrow it is gone. [Can you relate to that?] . . . Some of the knowledge we receive here at one time becomes so completely obliterated, through the weakness [of our physical bodies], that we cannot call it to mind, no association of ideas will again suggest it to our minds; it is gone, erased, eradicated from the tablet of our memories. [Why?] . . . There is imperfection in the organization of the flesh and bones, and in things pertaining to the tabernacle; it is this that erases from our memory many things that would be useful. . . . It is not so with the spirit when it is released from this tabernacle.
. . . Wait until these mortal bodies are laid in the tomb . . . ; then is the time we shall have the most vivid knowledge [and memory]. [JD 2:239]
